Raoul Barre

January 29, 1874 — Montréal, Québec, Canada

Raoul Barré is a cartoon pioneer who has lived in Montréal, Paris and New York. Barré studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and worked as an illustrator and cartoonist. He founded the Barré-Nolan Studio and contributed to the industrialization of animation.

He invented the “slash system” and the “peg bar”, major innovations in animation. Barré trained many famous animators, including those who created Felix the Cat.

He returned to Montréal in 1929, where he continued to paint and exhibit.
